I love watching television. Something about tuning in every week and seeing a storyline develop gets me excited. I believe what makes a great television show are the characters. Of course the storyline is important, but the characters are what connect me to the show. I?ve mentioned Battlestar Galactica many times before, and that?s because I believe it was one of the greatest television shows ever. The show was pioneering in tackling sensitive issues like the war in Iraq, abortion, and the balance of power between a government and military. However, the ensemble cast is what really pushes the show into a different stratosphere. We meet these characters in the most impossible of circumstances, and instead of these individuals being portrayed as exemplarily human beings, they are all shown with unique character flaws. Just like all of us.
However, I?m not writing about Battlestar Galactica. I simply wanted to make a point about why I loved the show so much. I also enjoy watching House, Scrubs, Entourage, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Office, South Park, and Caprica. Each of which feature (in my opinion) unforgettable characters.
This past baseball season I was introduced to a new television show, and I simply fell in love with it. The show is ?EastBound and Down,? which follows Kenny Power (Danny McBride) on his fall from atop professional baseball, and his inability to acclimate to ?regular? life. Kenny Powers is possibly the most unique character on television. Its amazing how the shows creators (Best, Hill, Mcbride, Harwell) developed a racist bigot who is a complete asshole, but your still hoping he succeeds. Powers is often accompanied by his semi-retarded assistant Stevie Janowski, who will be the only recurring character to return in season two. The new season airing September 26th on HBO, will follow Powers shenanigans as he plays his way through the Mexican baseball league.
If you haven?t seen season one of EastBound and Down, I suggest watching it immediately. I have posted a video of some great moments from season one. Enjoy!
