I am a longtime Madden player who has purchased every Madden since Daunte Culpepper graced the cover in Madden 2002. From year to year, EA Sports does their best to make changes in the game to help justify the $60 price tag for what basically ends up being a roster update. And without fail, EA Sports always misses the point. The fans that purchase Madden on a year to year basis don?t care about these new features, they just want to play the new Madden and dominate their friends. I never read up on these new and improved features that are supposed revolutionize the game every year, I buy the game because the cover says Madden.

Madden 11 was no different. This year?s big breakthrough to make the game more realistic is GameFlow. This is possibly the worst addition to the madden game since QB vision was introduced in Madden 06. Basically, GameFlow picks your plays for you based on the situation and rhythm of the game. I?m sorry, I thought the purpose of a video game was to have fun and do what you wanted to win a game, but for some reason the geniuses at EA thought, ?wow, wouldn?t it be great if we had a mode where the game picks the play for you?!? They already have the ask madden option in the playbook, this was just one step too far. I bet in the next Madden, they?ll have a mode where you don?t even play and you just watch from the sidelines. Oh wait, they already did that with EA Head Coach. I wonder why there wasn?t an EA Head Coach 11, or Head Coach 10 for that matter. Oh right, that?s because it sucked.

Now for those of you with a pulse, you can turn off the GameFlow option, but while setting up the game options, Madden had the nerve to write (recommended) under GameFlow. To make it worse, when playing a ranked match online, you don?t have the choice of turning off GameFlow, you actually have to press square for PS3 or X for XBOX360 to see the playbook. I find it beyond annoying to actually have to press a button to see the playbook.

Next, EA has added a Madden shop where you can purchase (with real money, not monopoly dollars) coins that then grant you access to scouting reports to use in online games, game boosts, and accelerators. You can purchase all this worthless information and much much less for the low price of 50 real American dollars which will get you 200,000 imaginary coins. Way to be classy EA.

On a neutral note, the elimination of the turbo button hasn?t really affected me all that much. It actually bothers me more on defense when I try to charge the line of scrimmage with my linebacker and it ends up being more like a slow trot to the play. Also, the auto strafe if something that I find as a hindrance while playing on defense. It slows my player down and makes it harder to make a good play on the ball. It seems to me that every change Madden has made is to make the game more realistic and more simplistic for the lesser talented players out there.

In addition, Madden also changed the buttons for the pre-snap adjustments which annoys me because now I have to relearn everything that I knew by instinct. It was another unnecessary change that annoys the few people who actually use the pre-snap buttons.

On the bright side, Madden 11 has an awesome sound track that almost makes up for all of their shortcomings.
