With the premiere of Boardwalk Empire tonight on HBO the fall television season has finally kicked off, and I have to say I?m pumped. While there are a few new shows that have caught my attention. I?m quite excited to see how some of my favorite shows storylines pan out. My preference in television shows is purely character driven. If the show doesn?t have intriguing characters then I?m most likely not interested. In fact, I?ve stopped watching shows that have entertaining storylines because the characters have no substance. With that being said here are my top shows to watch this fall!
1) Boardwalk Empire- as I stated I watched the premiere like everyone else tonight, and I was very impressed with the shows first steps. For those of you not familiar, Boardwalk Empire takes place during the Prohibition in Atlantic City. Enoch ?Nucky? Thompson played by Steve Buscemi is a politician/gangster. While you definitely get a look at his sleazy politician side you also see a humanitarian. In the shows first episode which ran an hour and fifteen minutes we see character development that doesn?t exist in many movies. The plot of the first episode is a little slow moving, but picks up towards the end. All signs to me indicate that HBO has another hit on their hands.
2) House - if you haven?t watched House, your most likely not going to start, but are certainly missing out. I?ve watched this medical drama evolve over the years from a Law and Order solve the case and move on show to rich and fulfilling character drama. I?m one of those people who laughed watching House when he wasn?t dating Cuddy. I can only imagine how much more humorous the show will get with a bevy of sexual jokes and innuendos headed our way.
3) Eastbound and Down - Kenny fucking POWERS! Enough said.
4) South Park - like a fine wine the show continues to get better with age. I wish that I could comment on the upcoming season, but we all know Matt Stone and Trey Parker haven?t started writing the stories yet.
5) The Event - while I?m sad to say I never watched 24, I don?t think I can pass up this opportunity. If you have watched any TV in the past month then you have probably seen The Event being advertised. The reviews from the first show have been positive, but people have stated they still have no idea what the show is about. Well I guess will have to tune into week one and two at least.
6) Caprica - the Battlestar fans were supposed to have to wait until January to see the return of this on the rise drama. However, Syfy gave us a little surprise by premiering the second half of season one on October 5th. Syfy is putting Caprica in traditionally its most watched time slot hoping to get this show over the hump. If Caprica is unable to perform in this time slot then the show will most likely fade away, which is sad considering this show is slowly evolving into one of the best dramas on television.
7) Hawaii Five 0 - I?ve been on the fence about watching this show for quite some time. I think remakes (with the exception of Battlestar) are traditionally not good. However, this show stars Grace Park who helped revitalize Battlestar. So if she can do it once she can do it again. I also like Scott Caan and his douche baggy ways.
These are the shows I plan on watching, and I?m sure a few more will come along and surprise me. It?s hard to imagine this is the first time since 2001 that there won?t be a new episode of Scrubs to tune into.
