We are a brand driven society. It could be the clothes we wear, the televisions we watch, the food we eat, or the games we play. Now I know there are some hippie gamers out there who say they don?t buy brands. Well on the simple fact that you own either a Microsoft Xbox, a Sony Playstation, or a Nintendo Wii makes you a brand buyer. However, I wanted to go deeper then looking at the console you own, and examine how many games we play are ?brand? names. My research looked at fifty random gamertags on my friends list, and from that fifty I looked at each players five previously played games. I have to be honest the results even surprised me. Here are my findings:
1) 20 out of 50 (40%) played at least on Xbox Live Arcade Title
2) 35 out of 50 (70%) played at least one Call of Duty Title
The total number of games I reviewed were 250 (50x5), but on that list there were 28 Xbox Arcade titles so I subtracted that from the 250. So we have 222 full-title games, and out of that 222 there 210 games that were part of franchises. That is 94.6%. I qualified a franchise as a game that has one or more installment, however if the game was first installment of a franchise and there are now more then one title I did not count it. For example, Call of Duty, Bad Company 2, and Fifa all qualify as franchises. However, Left 4 Dead 1 did not count, but Left 4 Dead 2 did.
My friends list is comprised of very diverse people that I have accumulated over 7.5 years of having an XBL account. So I believe my sample represents the Xbox live community very well. If you have findings that refute mine I would love to hear about them.
