A few years ago when I heard Microsoft was working with Rare to bring the N64 classic Goldeneye to the Xbox I was jubilant. I mean who wouldn't want to play the originator of the modern first person shooter with updated graphics and online capabilities? However, the rumors were too good to be true. Nintendo was not going to allow one of it's competitors (Microsoft) to make money off a franchise that became famous on their system. Instead of a Goldeneye with a modern controller scheme, gamers are going to get a Wii exclusive developed by Activision who owns the James Bond rights. The game is now starring Daniel Craig, and while the gamer will recognize parts of the storyline, the adventure has been heavily modified.
I don't know about anyone else, but my opinion on reimaginations is for the most part they never turn out as good as the original, unless were talking about Battlestar Galactica of course. The things I was looking forward to from an updated Goldeneye become obsolete on the Wii. For example, Xbox Live, playing with a modern controller, high definition graphics, and updated physics just to name a few. I just don't think Goldeneye can be successful by trying to hang onto it's roots while trying to add modern FPS elements.
The irony of the situation is that Goldeneye is going to appear on the console that hardcore shooters use the least. So I ask, is anyone excited for the new Goldeneye?
