On this day of September 11th I woke up thinking only of the many college football games that were on television today. It has been nine years since the terrorist attacks, and I have to admit that I wasn't thinking about all of the people who died and all of the people that were affected.
Upon flipping through the channels, I could not ignore all of the names that were being read off by family members of the deceased and speakers involved in the construction of the building going up in their honor.
The one thing that I noticed above all else was the tremendous variety of last names being read off. There were people from every race and ethnic background imaginable who died in the attacks. It was truly eye-opening to see the deceased photos and hear their names because they were all so different, but they were all Americans.
I'm not trying to sound corny, but for me, the most touching aspect of the show on TV was that so many people, from so many different backgrounds all died on that one day, and now people from all different realms were coming together to honor them. Watching the show really made me proud to be an American, because people can say what they want about us, yet people from all over the world all try to live here because of the opportunities and promise that this country offers.
