Easiest Job

Head coaches in all sports are given too much credit for success and too much hardship for failure. After all, if you don't have the horses, the greatest coach couldn't get an untalented bunch to beat a dominating team. To me, baseball requires almost no coaching at the pro level. Give me a bag of sun flower seeds, preferably jalapeno flavored, and I can make magic happen from the dugout with a stacked team like the Yankees have.

Generation Z Sports Mindset

The List

Generation Z Sports Mindset

This list was inspired by JayRizzi?s Beloit College Mindset List for the Class of 2014. Basically, this is a list of how kids from Generation Z think about sports. Generation Z?s earliest birth is generally dated in the mid 1990s and continues through now. So I am talking about kids stretching from elementary school to at the very latest sophomores in high school....Read more

Can a Woman Coach Football?

Women in Football

I was reading an article in the Stamford Advocate by Nina Burleigh about a woman who is coaching boys varsity football in Washington, D.C., and it got me thinking if it was a good idea. On the surface it seemed like a great concept, but I had trouble imagining high school aged boys, playing the most physically demanding high school sport, responding well to a female authority. The bottom line was how could they take what she was saying seriously?...Read more

Toby Gerhart

A For Effort

Toby Gerhart

I cannot say that I am expecting much out of the Minnesota Vikings second round pick Toby Gerhart. Drafted from Stanford, in his senior season he finished second in the Heisman balloting to a true stud in Mark Ingram Jr. He wasn't too high on most peoples drafting lists entering his senior season, however he destroyed defenses in the Pac-10, and in the process put up some pretty gaudy numbers that were hard to ignore....Read more

Addressing Professional Sports in Washington

State of the Union

As some of you may have heard, the Washington Nationals signed 17 year old phenom, Bryce Harper, to a five-year, 9.9 million dollar contract. Harper was anointed as ?Baseball?s Chosen One? at 16 years old when he graced the cover of Sports Illustrated....Read more

You Suck

Go back in time and change it

You Suck

Anyone who has been tuning into the HBO series Hard Knocks knows the Jets expect to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl, which as a Jet fan is a refreshing thought. For years the Jets have taken a back seat to the Giants in the minds of sports enthusiasts in New York. Hard Knocks is showing that the Jets are no longer going to take a backseat to anyone. Hopefully, they will show it on the field and not just talk about it in some documentary.

Teams to Watch

Sleeper Teams

Teams to Watch

I am going to be very interested to see what team emerges from the AFC-West. The division features the perennial favorite Charges, the underachieving Broncos, and two of the leagues bottom feeders in the Chiefs and Raiders. I personally won't care to watch the Chiefs or Chargers, and I wouldn't care about the Broncos if Tebow weren't drafted by them. I am very much interested however in the Oakland Raiders. Since loosing in the Superbowl what seems like eons ago to Tampa Bay, the team has done nothing. However, upon replacing the overweight lethargic Russel, with a true talent in Campbell, the team could surprise some people. Vegas clearly doesn't like the Raiders to do much, as they have them at 100-1 to win it all, but I think with some of their young talent at the skill positions, they could creep up on some teams. ...Read more

Euro Big Men

Euros are taking over

Euro Big Men

I believe that European basketball players are a different breed of player from their American counterparts. They grow em big in many parts of Eastern Europe, but the big men tend to play a different version of the great game. The big men from overseas don't play how their size would indicate, rather, they rely on shooting from long range by using their tremendous size to arc a shot over American bigs who aren't used to guarding a perimeter player. Is this an effective way to play, and can this new breed of NBA player make the center position from yesteryear obsolete?...Read more
